Fire: Ceremony and Spectacle
August 9th through October 24th, 2024
From lighting strikes to ancient lava flows, to campfires and a candle’s glow, the power of fire has captured our imaginations and fueled our resilience. For centuries we have created ceremonies and spectacles celebrating the fearsome force of fire. Witnessing transformation in the burn scars on our landscape and offering up our failings and frailties to the flames for release and purification, New Mexico has a rich relationship with fire. We salute this blazing element by exhibiting these artworks that reflect our reverence for time honored traditions and commemorate the rebirth from embers and ashes.
Ignite your curiosity about fire by immersing yourself in this exhibition of fine art from some of Santa Fe’s extraordinary contemporary artists who represent this eternal light through pastels, digital photography, color aquatint and photogravure as well as charcoal, acrylic and shellac ink. With the generous support of the City of Santa Fe’s Department of Arts and Culture, the Santa Fe Gallery Association is delighted to share work from: Armond Lara, John Baldessari and Nathan Budoff, represented by form and concept gallery, as well as Patrick Lysaght, represented by ENTROPY Gallery. This exhibition includes a wall featuring photos by Jan Butchofsky, represented by Edition ONE Gallery, that visually tell the story of two Mescalero maidens being inducted into the community as women through a sacred, fiery, tribal tradition.
Additionally, in the alcove above the doors to the tarmac ticketed passengers will find 3 of the 33 fine art finished Zozobras created by Heidi K. Brandow, Nicholas Herrera (EVOKE Contemporary) and a collaboration between Bouchra Beghali and William Rotsaert (Art Is Gallery) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the burning of Zozobra.
Curated by Lisa Stewart Keating for the Santa Fe Gallery Association in collaboration with the City of Santa Fe Department of Arts & Culture.
