Call for Artists
The Los Alamos County Art in Public Places Board (APPB) is inviting artists to submit proposals to create a distinctive art piece that serves a dual purpose: a secure gate for the Betty Ehart Senior Activity Center that ensures safety while also enhancing the visual appeal of the area. Although APPB is soliciting suggestions and recommendations for artwork to meet this need, please be aware that they are not bound to make selections or purchases from this solicitation effort.
All submissions become public documents upon receipt. Location The Betty Ehart Senior Activity Center is located at 1101 Bathtub Row, Los Alamos, New Mexico.
The location for the proposed gate is at the base of the outdoor stairs on the building's North side. This stairwell overlooks a patio area designated for LARSO activities and is adjacent to a planned space for a future outdoor classroom at the neighboring library to the West.
Concept
The APP Board seeks an artistic gate that balances functionality and aesthetic appeal. This gate will secure the stairwell from outside access while providing a safe emergency exit from within. It should not only serve its practical purpose but also enhance the beauty of the surrounding area. The design must include the necessary hardware for installation, along with a provision for attaching a panic/crash bar (to be supplied by the County) on the gate's backside. All artists are encouraged to visit the proposed site at the Senior Activity Center to gain inspiration and insight into the designated space. APPB Members and Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization (LARSO) staff drew inspiration for this project from "Odetta," an artistic gate created by K.R. (Cricket) Ernst at the Mesa Public Library. While "Odetta" serves as a source of inspiration, we welcome a diverse range of creative expressions that may vary significantly from this example and reflect your unique vision.
For additional context, "Odetta" is located at the West entrance of the Mesa Public Library at 2400 Central Ave, Los Alamos, New Mexico. The estimated budget for this project is capped at $30,000, which includes the costs for the artwork, installation, and any additional related expenses. Dimensions of the Proposed Gate Height: 106 inches Width: Maximum of 55.75 inches Depth: Maximum of 9 inches Materials and Installation The materials used for this exterior artwork must be durable enough to withstand Los Alamos weather in all seasons.
All proposed artworks should have an expected life of at least 20 years. Los Alamos County will install the finished gate with the aid of the selected artist; however, the artist is to include installation description and specifications. Maintenance The County will provide all ongoing maintenance; the artist should include a description and schedule of recommended routine maintenance.

No lighting or landscaping is necessary for this project. Guarantee of Workmanship For a period of one (1) year from the date of acceptance of the artwork by the County, the artist will be expected to warrant and guarantee all workmanship and materials used in the work.
